House extension , Dublin 4.
The client brief was to demolish an existing old kitchen/bathroom extension and to replace it with a modern kitchen including also a utility and bathroom on the same level. The new layout consists of a full width brick extension off the original return of the terrace house, forming an inner courtyard with the original house. The bathroom and the utility have been accommodated to the ground floor of the original return facing the inner courtyard. This distribution has allowed, by incorporating windows and a door facing the inner courtyard, direct light and ventilation to each space facing it.
A fully glass timber fenestration and a roof light above the kitchen table makes the space very bright and connected to the outside garden and sky. The brick wall running flush from the inside to the outside on one side of the extension, contributes to connect the inside space to the outside garden.
The brick cladded monolithic symmetrical composition of the extension and the use of few materials, colours and texture for the extension gives a clear, strong look to the extension.
